Following with our blog published in June 2020 Home Internet Without Landline We are going to explain the different alternatives, characteristics, how to use it and the advantages and disadvantages.
Due to Spanish laws, it is not possible to contract ADSL or fiber without a fixed telephone or fixed line. According to the law, for each fiber or ADSL network there must be a fixed telephone line associated with its number.
This is why all operators that offer fiber / ADSL always linked to a fixed line, that is why they always break down the fee into two concepts: The rate for adsl / fiber and the rate for the fixed line, but you can’t really get adsl / fiber without a phone line.
However, it is possible to have only internet at home, without a telephone or land line, we will explain this to you in the next section.
Is it possible to have Internet at home without a landline or landline?
We explain it in 10 main points:
1.- Yes, it is totally possible to have Internet at home without a landline
The solution is to hire a 4G line at home, in such a way that we will not use ADSL or fiber optics, but a 4G connection, such as mobile phones, which will give us Internet to the whole house.
2.- If we hire 4G at home, we do not need a fixed mobile line
So we will have Internet throughout the house without having to pay the fee for the physical line.
3.- Hiring 4G at home has other advantages
Such as that you can take Internet wherever you want, if you have two houses or residences you can take your 4G Internet to the house you want, without having to process any transfer or anything.
Do you want more advantages? If you go on a trip you can have Internet in the Hotel or apartment where you stay, you will no longer have to go looking for free Wi-Fi everywhere, since you will always have Wi-Fi available wherever you are.
Do you use your landline still?
4.- Almost half of the households revealed that they never use their landline for phone calls, with more than a third stating that they only got the landline to access their broadband.
5.- There were big differences reported between over-65s – of which 95% still had a landline – compared to just 52% of 18-24-year-olds. 83% of those that lived in rural areas also kept their landlines since mobile phone reception was weak or unreliable, unlike urban areas in which less than two thirds still had a home phone.
6.- Your best bet if you want to get broadband without landline rental is to consider mobile broadband. With 4G essentially becoming the standard mobile connection in most areas, and 5G rolling out to an increasing number of locations, mobile broadband has a very wide amount of coverage and is getting faster than ever.
A 5G mobile broadband hub could legitimately compete with some ultrafast fixed-broadband speeds, so it may be a great alternative if you don’t want to keep paying for a landline you never use.
How do I get broadband without a phone line?
7.- Pros and cons of alternatives
If you have access 4G/5G mobile broadband, you could say goodbye to your traditional landline and still access great broadband speeds. So here are some pros and cons of each:
8.- Mobile broadband
If you’re set on getting broadband without a landline, then mobile broadband may be a good solution, depending upon what your typical internet usage is.
Mobile broadband that runs on a 4G network will have average speeds of 24Mbps, which would be enough for basic online activities like email, Facebook, video calling and a bit of streaming.
However, they could be limiting if you wanted to do more, especially if other members of your household are trying to do the same. Streaming Netflix on speeds like this with a family who is also using the internet on their own devices could be frustrating and you’d spend a lot of time waiting for episodes to buffer.
Mobile broadband is a very flexible option
giving you access to your internet connection wherever you are, and it’s often the cheapest broadband without line rental available.
Currently, Tiekom has the most widely available fixed broadband network that doesn’t need a phone line.
However, it’s often the case broadband package with no phone line are more expensive than ones that include line rental. So even though you can get broadband without a phone line, it may still be cheaper in some cases to get a landline and just not use it.
9.- How does 4G work at home?
4G at homework’s in a very easy way, you only need a 4G or Mifi wifi router and a 4G contract at home with a telephone company, with this contract the provider usually includes the 4G router along with the SIM card 4G.
A 4G or Mifi wifi router is a normal router, with the difference that it is not connected to the telephone socket or the optical fiber, but rather has a slot so that you can put a 4G SIM card in it, like the one used by mobile phones.
Therefore, your devices at home connect to the router in a normal way, either by wifi or by ethernet cable, but the router gives you Internet thanks to 4G instead of using fiber or ADSL, but deep down for the user it is the same, you will not notice differences.
10.- 4G Wi-Fi routers are not very powerful
So that Wi-Fi reaches your entire house, you will need to buy a Wi-Fi repeater, or also a powerful Wi-Fi router that you can connect directly to the 4G router.
